Computing and Network Security - Virtual Machine Labs

Gaurav Malik is Associate Professor in Computer Science at the University of East London where he teaches in the areas of Cloud Computing, Networking Security and Mobile Application Development. Gaurav has an MSc in Internet Engineering and joined UEL as a full-time lecturer in 2003 bringing with him a wealth of software industry experience.

Gaurav is a prominent leader who is passionate about sharing his teaching and technical expertise. He has served on several panels for programme validation, he is an ISEB Certified Green IT trainer and holds Cloud certifications and teaching accolades including AWS Cloud Ambassador and Microsoft Learn Educator. He has delivered talks in areas including Social Media and Green IT and his research interests include Computer Science Education and Smart Cities. As an educator, Gaurav’s primary objective is to provide students with practical, hands-on experience.

“I aim to equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to excel in their future careers. To achieve this goal, I encourage my students to apply what they learn in the classroom and engage in experiential learning. By doing so, they can experiment, explore, and gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Ultimately, my aim is to prepare them for the challenges and opportunities they will face in their chosen profession.”

Gaurav teaches in-person with some online sessions and uses a range of interactive tools to engage students. UEL uses Cengage’s MindTap to support teaching and learning on select modules.

“MindTap revolutionised how we deliver teaching on a network security module. It removed the administration overhead we had for maintaining the lab infrastructure and gave students the ability to do highly complex labs on demand both in class and remotely.”
